V/A - Killed By Deathrock

You might have heard of the classic punk compilations 'Killed By Death', but now there's a gothic spin off entitled Killed By Deathrock. It is - as the title suggests - a collection of gothic punk, put together by the popular alternative label Sacred Bones Records, known for releasing music by acts such as Zola Jesus, Cult Of Youth and Lust For Youth.

Killed By Deathrock is said to be a collection of obscure bands, but if that's the case then I'm wondering what bands like The Naked And The Dead and Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons are doing on it. The latter had a pretty big renaissance a few years back, and Liberty - the song featured here - has been released on both vinyl and CD in the last couple of years. Not that it matters much as there's plenty of good songs on here. 'When I'm Alone' by Twisted Nerve is the highlight on this comp, as it's the best tune by the Scottish band and has been impossible to find in a proper quality until now. It being included makes up for the mediocre songs by Taste of Decay and Afterimage. All in all this is a decent release and a good purchase for people wanting to get a bit closer to the genre.
