Tee Vee Pop - The Only Years

Tee Vee Pop was formed in Copenhagen in 1980, and thus was part of the first wave of Danish punk rock. The band went to the studio in 1982 and recorded the 9 songs present on this release. Four of the songs was released as an EP by the label Irmgardz while the rest came out on various cassette tapes.

In Denmark the band has always been considered a punk band, but they've got such a dark edge that they could easily be classified as goth in the same way as early Siouxsie and the Banshees or Blood and Roses. I don't know if they ever shared stage with the other Danish band ADS, but it would make a lot of sense if they did, as they also were a goth band that grew out of the punk music scene.

The 9 songs on this record doesn't show a whole lot of versatility, but the formula works so well that it doesn't matter much to me. The instruments plays so well together in creating a dark punk sound with its noisy guitars and monoton rhythms, and the singing of Xenia is just great. It's seems clear to me that they took their cue from bands such as The Banshees, Killing Joke and SODS, so if you're into that kind of stuff then this is worth the money.
