Interview with Dee from Nöi Kabát

The British duo Nöi Kabát isn't a household name in the Danish synth scene, but that might change after the 21st of August when they play in Denmark for the first time. Dee and Jonas have a solid fanbase abroad due to their unusual mixture of synth pop and early industrial sounds, so we are thrilled to finally be able to present them to the audience in Copenhagen.

TOT: Nöi Kabát is probably a new name for most of the audience here in Copenhagen, so maybe we should start with a short introduction. Who's in the band and how did you get started?

DEE: It's myself Dee Rusche (vocals and electronics) and Jonas Ranson (drums), we started in London in 2012 really meeting via dj'ing and a love of the same kinds of music and have done a few European tours and we've been released on Aufnahme + Weidergabe (7"), Desire & Domestica (12" compilations) since.

TOT: You have a couple of recordings up on your Bandcamp page, and they show a love of somewhat experimental, yet danceable synth music. Where do you find your inspiration? I seem to hear everything from classic industrial to italo disco in your tunes.

DEE: Yes, it kind of comes from all over. The music behind can be quite poppy but rooted in discordant minor chords and harsh sounds whilst my vocals I would say are not your typical industrial band kind of thing. Our influences range far and wide in a lot of genres.

TOT: Do you find inspiration in other things besides music? Any films, books or strange oddities that help you create your sound?

DEE: I'm a big reader so I always find inspiration in golden age science fiction or weird 19th century gothic novels. Jonas is a print artist so he works on his own art as well as with a number of interesting artists all the time.

TOT: You mention on your Bandcamp that you work without the aid of computers. How do you feel about using computers in electronic music? Sometimes you see musicians performing solely on laptops.

DEE: This has actually changed since the beginning of this year. We were a 3-piece and did everything played live but one member left so we have had to replace him with a laptop at present so I can still have the freedom and space to sing without being constrained into playing behind a keyboard. Everything you will hear coming from the laptop though has been played live or will be coming out of an analog synth/fx pedals live.

TOT: What can we expect from your concert in Copenhagen?

DEE: Expect nothing and everything all at once.
